Rare Postal Rate 1801 EL to Stonehaven with the fine MONTROSE namestamp AN245 on front. There is no manuscript postal rate on front, but there is an endorsement on reverse "One letter/one hapenny/Dispatched/20th at 8". Apparently there was a private arrangement between the postmasters of Montrose and Stonehaven for the carriage of mail between the towns, these local charges were usually 1d or 2d but this halfpenny rate is the first and only example seen in Scotland.
